Open Artificial Intelligence
The rise of AI is inevitable. Even if you don’t like how it’s growing or it’s implication of job loss, it’s the next big thing and you can’t do anything about it.
But there are certain ethical problems associated with AI. The list keeps on increasing everyday. How the data is trained, is this legal, how authors or artists should be compensated, whether they said be compensated in the first place, what is fair and is there a limit to how advance a technology should be.
And amidst all of these, you are finding that the powers are being concentrated in the hands of few people. You don’t want that and hence a search and need for an open artificial intelligence.
Monopolies In The Internet
Gmail isn’t free to use. It’s how you get people to get hooked on the email from Google. And slowly the others would get out of business because Gmail can take a loss. And when there is no other email service, Gmail wins.
Of course, this isn’t the case with Gmail yet, you get the idea.
So as a consumer, you should always check for local competitors, indie developers and open source solutions. And if you can manage with that, then better to go with that.
Because if everyone only listens on Spotify for podcast then others will eventually shut down. And then Spotify can dictate any rules either for creating or listening podcast and you would have no choice but to obey.
And now we are seeing the similar trajectory with AI. The previous monopolies like Microsoft, Google are creating AI. And if you are locked in them, their monopolies continue and you get everything at their mercy.
Open Artificial Intelligence
It means either publicly developed – owned by none coding of Artificial Intelligence or a company dedicated to creating a repository of such. Right now, the rise of AI seems to be from private players aiming to get the piece of the cake.
Since AI is the next big thing, it’s going to get big and might replace search. Google is feeling threatened and so are many websites. If an AI tool can deliver all the information then slowly you will not be able to earn money. If an audience doesn’t come on your website, you can’t earn ad or subscription money.
And slowly AI will dictate who is allowed to be on their list of sources. They will dictate their remuneration, who is allowed and also as an audience you will be limited. In the disguise of AI, you will get subpar, exploited information.
The more scenarios you create, the more challenges AI brings up.
All of these would be resolved if AI is open, or there is an open source option good enough. And people choose a mix of private and public options. It’s tough and we have to act on this because unlike other previous big things, AI is the fastest moving technology.
What Are Some Open AI?
The discussion around free of open source AI on reddit : https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/131mta5/what_is_the_best_free_or_opensource_alternative/ is so less. When there are less options, you know it’s scary.
AI can’t be controlled by a few people. The monopolies and the disturbance it would created is huge. As an audience, the best you can do is choose different AI’s for now, don’t dump the traditional sources. Trust humans for their connection, experience and ideas.
AI isn’t perfect yet – and even when it is, you have a choice to use AI moderately so that the monopolies aren’t created and humanity still has a chance.
