What’s The Point of Life?

It’s a sorta existential question and something which has bothered both the commoners and the philosophers. The usual chain of thought goes like this – the human life is limited and in the grand scheme of the Universe, your existence don’t matter. And so whatever you do, the Universe is and will be untouched and minding it’s own business. So then, what’s the point of life? And usually, after such thoughts, you come to the conclusion that life is random, pointless and with no meaning. Yes, sure, humans have developed their minds and have been curious about the Universe, but we are the exception and not the norm. Rest all of the life forms, simply live, reproduce, eat and die. They have no time or curiosity to wonder about the meaning, the vastness of the Universe or anything for that matter. They function at the very primal level. And when it’s the norm – maybe that’s what nature intended, and we are the fungus of the cycle.

The need for meaning is the roo of all such questions. But what if we let go of our desire to life have any meaning. What if the Universe didn’t intend for life to happen? It just happened and we are here trying to find the ultimate cause and purpose when it was all an accident all along.

Relationship Between Universe and You

The Universe, as far as we know, doesn’t have life as we know it. There are rocks and space between them, floating in endless vastness. And the space between them is increasing, and for as long as we know it, we won’t catch beyond a certain point because we are limited by the speed of light.

And among the lifeforms, we are the only ones who pierce through the telescope and see what’s in store from the Universe.

In essence, the Universe has its existence through us. It gets its meaning and presence through us. If there were no humans, Universe wouldn’t matter, it would be as if it didn’ exist.

You exist, and therefore Universe exists. Isn’t this enough of meaning for human life? You are the observer of the Universe.

Your Life Matters

Maybe there is meaning to all this madness or is all of it random with meaning. But regardless, you have a life to live. You have moments to cherish and it will be futile to live life recklessly.

The Universe might be full of meaning and your life would be random. And the Universe will go on regardless of what you do. So, why not live your life with full of meanings and purpose. Isn’t that the best way out?

From your perspecive, you experience only 80 years of your life. Outside of that, are all philosophical questions and good for banter but not good for living life. For you, those time matters, those memories and meaning you garner in those 80 years matter. And if after your death, the Universe doesn’t care, then why should you even care while you are living once you are dead, the Universe cease to exist for you.

Way Forward

Yes, flex your brain muscles thinking about the point of life. Yes, explore the Universe to marvel at its vastness and anything new it has to offer.

But also, live your life like it’s the only Universe you have. Your 80 years are yours to live, interpret and live the best possible life. And that can be attained by finding meaning, purpose, and contentment within those interactions.

Your family, friends and neighbours are all your Universe. You should care for them and live your life around those meanings, and you will live an amazing life.

The universe might have a meaning or not – someday, we will figure it out. But until then, don’t forget to live your life.
